Absorption occurs when light has the same vibrational frequency as an absorbing substance and is manifested as a pattern of dark lines or bands.
Reflection (and transmission) occurs when the light frequencies of vibration do not match, and the light is either bounced off or passes through.
These two stars are mirrors of one another, although they do not at first blush appear to be. One is more controlled and in a darkened palette (absorption), and the other shows more chaos and is in a light palette (reflection), and the aesthetic mirror goes further. The stars appear as opposites but they are made of the same substance and the same colors. The difference in presentation is in the way they interact with the light and perceived presence, or their visibility.
